Dear Members -

Here’s a partial list of all the events NIBA will be involved in during the next thirty days:

  1. March 25: Risk Management Breakfast Meeting at Arditti Center, DePaul University in Chicago
  2. April 3: CFTC Roundtable in Washington DC for end users, including discussion of issues surrounding Recording Requirement 1.35
  3. April 15: NIBA Opinion Letter Regarding the NFA Proposed CPO/CTA Capital Requirements
  4. May 1: NIBA Spring Member Meeting at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.

Yes - this is a typical schedule! Every month the NIBA participates in or presents at least four or five activities which directly affect our members‘ business. Whether it is submitting an opinion on regulation or providing an educational program, NIBA members have a voice.

Each of the four dates and events for the upcoming month are more fully discussed in this newsletter. Please contribute to the discussion by sending me or any other board member an email with your suggests and comments.

This month we also note:

  1. The CME is still under fire for the market data fee raise. We’re still in the conversation, and would like to know if, and how, this is affecting you. Comments to Steve Petillo, petillo@coquest.com
  2. We’ve begun a new feature whose purpose is to get your questions and concerns directly to the NFA officers and employees who can help - you remain anonymous. Visit Questions for the NFA? Comments for NFA? No problem just call the NIBA!
  3. Last month’s southern California meeting in Newport Beach, CA was great! Thank you to CME Group and the NFA for co-sponsoring a terrific event.

And congratulations to RJ O’Brien on their 100th Anniversary in the industry! Thanks RJO for being a NIBA supporter.

Best regards, Melinda

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...

At the same time, rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning offer powerful opportunities for private sector firms and financial institutions to enhance their risk management capabilities. The Center promotes the development of the risk management field by bridging the...
