Dear Members:

As we approach our 25th Anniversary Year, I want to emphasize that the mission of the NIBA is to provide education for IBs, CTAs and their APs which enables those registrants to grow their business. Education includes knowledge of regulation and how to comply, product/market updates, and marketing and other business practices unique to the futures industry.

We meet the goals of the NIBA mission through the publication of a twice-monthly newsletter, regularly scheduled meetings with the regulators and at in-person conferences. Our annual September meeting is the largest gathering of NIBA members each year.

On September 24 at the CME Group Building in Chicago, your NIBA membership entitles you to a full day of business sessions, including a Demo Hall and a cocktail reception. Sessions include:

  • NFA Representatives Annual Update - moderated by Rodney Dow, The Dow Corp.
  • The El Nino Effect - moderated by Bryce Anderson, DTN
  • Top 5 Member Questions - Answered! - moderated by Mike Coglianese, Michael Coglianese CPA
  • Cybersecurity: Before & After the Breach - moderated by Arlene Yetnikoff, DePaul University & Univ. of Chicago
  • Cybersecurity: What You Need to Know Now! - moderated by Matt Kluchenek, Baker & McKenzie

I encourage you to make September 24th your "can't miss" meeting this fall. Each panel of industry experts will arm you with the tools you need to meet the daily issues of our business. You will leave this meeting with ideas and plans which you can put into action in your firm the very next day. And you will connect with colleagues and make new friends.

I look forward to each event the NIBA presents - February in southern California, April in New York City, July and September in Chicago. Many members have told me they consider these meetings are the biggest benefit of membership.

This year's conference committee has planned a terrific day -- thanks to John Nelson, Applied Research; Tom Sandy, Rice Dairy; Mark Shore, Shore Capital Management; Mike Burke, Highground Trading; Mike Coglianese, Michael Coglianese CPA, PC; Steve Petillo, Coquest, Inc.; and, Barbara Schmidt-Bailey, CME Group.

Best regards, Melinda

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...

At the same time, rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning offer powerful opportunities for private sector firms and financial institutions to enhance their risk management capabilities. Honoring a Legacy: The Founding and Mission of the Arditti Center Founded in 2006, the Arditti Center for Risk Management honors the life and legacy of the late Fred Arditti - a distinguished economist, pioneer in the futures industry, and former executive at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange - who also served as a member of DePaul University's finance faculty. The Center promotes the development of the risk management field by bridging the...
