Dear Members-

The Answer: Communication, Communication, Communication.
The Question: What’s the most important benefit of your NIBA Membership?

The NIBA’s mission is to keep communication channels open between members, and between members and other industry participants, including regulators. The dialogue helps keep you informed and assures that your opinions are heard. This what the Association is doing this month:

  • May 30 - NIBA filed a request for an extension of time to the CFTC for implementation and enforcement of Rule 1.71 - Conflict of Interest
  • June 1 - CFTC granted NIBA’s request and extended enforcement for all IBs and FCMs for 60 days. (Request and CFTC letter found in this month's Newsletter.)
  • June 2 - General Creditor Claims filing deadline in the MF Global Bankruptcy.
  • June 5 - NIBA/CME Joint Webinar with Bryan Durkin, CEO of the CME Group as Guest Speaker and Mike Burke, Secretary of the NIBA as moderator. The Membership Only event addressed ongoing issues surrounding the MF Global collapse. It is now archived on both the NIBA and CME Group websites.
  • June 18 - MHS Capital Resource, Inc and CME Group survey distributed electronically to IBs and non-clearing FCMs. This confidential survey was developed by me and the CME in order to get a current picture of the retail segment of our industry. We will produce an information paper and I will reference the survey results when I write the 4th Edition of The Complete IB Handbook. The handbook will be available approximately late September.
  • June 12/13 - MFA in Chicago. Various NIBA Board Members will be participating in MFA activities and the surrounding events.
  • June 21 - NIBA Summer Marketing and Sales Event co-hosted by the Kansas City Board of Trade at the exchange in Kansas City, MO. Program details and registration forms are found here. As always, this event is complimentary for NIBA members, but early registration closes June 18. There is a $25.00 late charge for everyone registering after June 18, including walk-ins. For additional information about the meeting program contact Kristi Aupperle at kaupperle@advance-trading.com or me, melinda@futuresrep.com.
  • June 27 - NIBA West Coast IB Summit co-hosted by CME Group. This annual informal get-together for local southern California IBs, takes place in Irvine, Ca. John Jensen is the host. For information contact John at jjensen@hwfi.com.

And this is just June! Communication is a benefit of your NIBA membership. Attend an event, listen in on a webinar, be part of your Association.

Warm Regards,
Melinda

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...

The Center promotes the development of the risk management field by bridging the...
