Check out recaps from two attendees!

"Contemplating the long drive to Newport Beach, I am really glad I did attend this meeting!

I’ve got to meet several of my colleagues and share my interest with them. It was nice leaving the office and so many “ regulations”  behind for a few hours of sharing ideas. Mr. Bluford Putnam, Managing director and Chief Economist of CME group, shared his views and gave us ideas on the patterns that we should be looking for in several markets. I especially enjoyed Ms. Patricia McDonald’s presentation. She had covered several recent tax developments that affect us all including changes in long-term Capital gain, net investment income tax, and additional Medicare surtax and FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act).

I also wanted to personally thank the Chairman Ms. Melinda Schramm for all her support and dedication. I definitely recommend attending NIBA’s meetings to my colleagues. Come and meet your competition, get to know the CTAs face to face and have a drink in a relaxed environment!"

Sincerely,

Dr. K Hakimian, President

"It was a pleasure attending the NIBA SoCal meeting in Newport Beach. I'm pleased William Gallwas reached out to encourage my attendance. The presentation by the Chief Economist of CME Group was excellent. It was definitely worth the short trip down from Manhattan Beach. I look forward to attending more events in the future."

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...
