On November 30, the NIBA Advisory Group (AG) met in Chicago. The AG is a group of industry participants, each of whom has expertise in a specific area of the business. Expertises range from marketing to education, from legal to cybersecurity. This group met for the first time in 2015; members committed to a 2-year term. The mission of the AG is to share ideas for the growth and continued relevance of the NIBA. As a result of the first AG meeting held in December, 2015, the following three suggested topics were selected by the NIBA Board of Directors to implement because of their value to association members, and reasonable cost/speed of implementation.
  • Intern Program: We are currently working with De Paul University, Chicago to place students with NIBA members and service providers. Jerry Nolan (jnolan@countycorkllc.com) and Tom Sandy (ts@ricedairy.com), Co-chairs.
  • Resource Program: In the past year, we opened a resources portal on our website which includes white papers, various studies and other industry articles as a benefit of membership. Tom Sandy (ts@ricedairy.com), Chairman.
  • An Updated Website: In September 2016, NIBA rolled out a new website design with updated functionality. It has been well received by the membership, and is still being refined. Shane Stiles, shane@gate39media.com, Chairman
Fourteen members of the Advisory Group and the NIBA BoD attended the November 30 meeting. Fifteen representatives of NIBA member FCMs and Service Providers joined the AG for a short cocktail reception at the Union League Club in Chicago. Thanks to John Nelson, Applied Research for his help in the meeting planning. A full-listing of AG members and contact information is found on this website Link). A recap of this year’s meeting and the group’s suggestions for the association will appear in our January newsletter. If you have suggestions for the Advisory Group, please contact me.

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...
