Dear Members,

            “The AML session was the best I’ve ever attended...”

            “Loved the CTA Due Diligence session...”

            “Legal Update is always my favorite part of the NIBA Conference. I get so much information I don’t get anywhere else...”

 These are the top three comments heard from attendees at our September Fall Membership Conference. Several ‘old’ members told me this meeting was the best in last few years because:

(i)  every session provided information CFTC registrants/NFA members need in order to keep up with the numerous changes taking place in the industry;

            (ii) the presentations explained how to put the information into action; and,

            (iii) the full-day event meant there were more sessions to choose from.

 I also met several ‘new’ members during the coffee breaks and the reception. Every one of them told me they were surprised at how much information they received in one place and in one day at the NIBA meeting. They also learned they could take advance of benefit programs such as group health insurance and credit union membership which were only offered through the NIBA.

 This issue of the NIBA Newsletter and the next one are written by the presenters at the conference. Each of them has provided a follow-up to their September 18 presentation, and each of them invites you to make personal contact if you would like to continue the conversation.

 I also want to acknowledge the loss of a good friend. John Walsh created the Walsh Agency to provide ethics training and AML programs for the industry. He was the primary provider of this training for many FCMs and for the NIBA for many years. John passed away this year. His daughter and partner, Kathleen, will continue to operate the agency. John was a good friend to the industry and a good friend to his many friends and colleagues.

Best regards,

Melinda

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...

With a more complex global environment and continuous financial innovation, new and more sophisticated areas of risk have emerged. At the same time, rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning offer powerful opportunities for private sector firms and financial institutions to enhance their risk management capabilities. Honoring a Legacy: The Founding and Mission of the Arditti Center Founded in 2006, the Arditti Center for Risk Management honors the life and legacy of the late Fred Arditti - a distinguished economist, pioneer in the futures industry, and former executive at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange - who also served as a member of DePaul University's finance faculty. The Center promotes the development of the risk management field by bridging the...
