Dear Members -

On November 9, the NIBA will be in Washington, DC to meet with members of the CFTC, as well as other industry participants. Steve Petillo, Mike Burke and I want to bring those issues which are most important to YOU to the attention of the Commissioners. Please forward your suggestions and questions for the CFTC to anyone of us prior to October 30.

On October 12, the University of Illinois sponsored a symposium entitled “How Should We Measure Futures Investment Performance?” Organized by Dr. Paul Peterson, U of I Urbana-Champaign featured four presentations -- two presented by our NIBA colleagues. Jerry Nolan (County Cork, LLC), NIBA Board Member discussed “The Russian Invasion of Crimea and the Perfect Storm in the Soybean Crush: Three Investor Experiences with a Discretionary Ag Program in 2014.” Mark Shore (Shore Capital Research, LLC), NIBA Advisory Group member, presented a study entitled “Risk Management of a CTA.” For information on the presentations, contact Dr. Peterson, pepeters@illinois.com.

As the NIBA enters our 25th Anniversary Year, I’m happy and excited to announce the formation of the NIBA Advisory Group (AG). The AG is a group of industry professionals, each with a unique perspective on the futures business, who have agreed to share their expertise with our members. The AG will meet Dec. 2 in Chicago -- a full listing of the members is posted in a feature article in this newsletter.

Welcome to FCM member GAIN Capital Group, LLC, and to Service Provider members Ascent Technologies, Delkos Research, eSentire Inc., Exchange Analytics, Inc., Greenberg Traurig, Hinesite Consultants, LLC, JK Data Library, Lead Tiller, OptionsCity, QuikStrike and WallScott Solutions.

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...
